SCS SB 859 -- STATE HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICERS ON SCHOOL BOARDS
SPONSOR: Klindt (Stefanick)
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
General Laws by a vote of 8 to 0.
Current state law prohibits members of the State Highway Patrol
from holding elective office. This substitute permits them to
run for and serve on local school boards when they are otherwise
qualified for that office.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2005, FY 2006, and
FY 2007.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that State Highway Patrol officers
are the only professional group that is barred from holding
elective office. School districts often have trouble fielding
enough candidates to fill seats on the school board.
Testifying for the bill was Senator Klindt.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
